H. Clive Mather has been our Director since July 2007. Mr. Mather is the Independent Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Compensation, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. In June 2007, Mr. Mather retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Shell Canada Limited, one of the largest integrated petroleum companies in Canada, positions that he held since August 1, 2004. Mr. Mather’s career of 38 years with Shell spanned all of its major businesses and included assignments in Brunei, Gabon, South Africa, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Prior to being appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Shell Canada Limited, Mr. Mather was chairman of Shell UK Limited and head of global learning for Shell International Limited from 2002 to 2004. Mr. Mather was a Director of Placer Dome Inc. until its takeover in 2006, a Director of Shell Canada Limited and of the C.D. Howe Institute. He is currently the Chairman of the Shell Pensions Trust Ltd and Tearfund, both in the UK. Mr. Mather holds a Master of Arts degree from Lincoln College, Oxford. Mr. Mather is a companion of the Chartered Management Institute and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Norman D. Chirite has been our Director since 2001 and is a member of the Compensation, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. Mr. Chirite currently serves as Corporate Development Adviser to inVentiv Health, Inc., a pharmaceutical and life sciences services provider, and as Managing Director of RedZone Capital Management Company LLC, a private investment management company. He previously served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Washington Football Inc. from August 2002 until October 2005. Prior to that, Mr. Chirite was a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manages LLP in New York City, where he practiced corporate law from 1987 until 2000. Mr. Chirite serves as a Director of Comstock Homebuilding Companies and a number of privately held businesses. He received his Bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Michigan.
Philip Evershed has been our Director since 2004 and is a member of the Audit and Finance Committee. Mr. Evershed is a principal of Genuity Capital Markets, a privately-held Canadian investment bank. Prior to co-founding Genuity, Mr. Evershed spent 14 years at CIBC World Markets, most recently as co-head of investment banking and head of mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining CIBC, Mr. Evershed was Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Mr. Evershed is a Director of Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Toronto.
John M.A. Richardson has been our Director since 2001 and is a member of the Audit and Finance Committee. Mr. Richardson is the Chief Executive Officer of The Business, Engineering, Science & Technology Discoveries Fund Inc., or B.E.S.T., and of the B.E.S.T. Total Return Fund Inc. He is also the President and a Director of Absolute private counsel Ltd., the founder, President and a Director of B.E.S.T. Investment Counsel Limited, an asset management firm focused on private equity and venture capital serving the institutional marketplace, and Chief Executive Officer of Axis Investment Fund Inc. Currently, he serves as a Director on a number of private company boards. Mr. Richardson holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario in Administrative and Commercial Studies, a Diploma in Accounting from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Master’s of Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Certificat Pratique de Langue Française from the Université de Savoie in France. He is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Business Valuator.
Richard A. Gephardt has been our Director since October 2007 and is a member of the Compensation, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. Mr. Gephardt is a consultant to Goldman, Sachs & Co., a senior advisor to DLA Piper (law firm) since June 2005, and a senior advisor to FTI Consulting (specialized business consulting firm) since January 2007. Mr. Gephardt is the president and chief executive officer of Gephardt Group. Mr. Gephardt served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 2005, representing Missouri’s Third District for 28 years and holding key leadership positions, including House Majority Leader from 1989 to 1994 and House Minority Leader from 1995 to 2003. Mr. Gephardt serves as a director of US Steel Corporation, Spirit Aerosystems, Inc., and Centene Corporation. Mr. Gephardt holds a Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School.
Morris E. Zukerman has been our Director since July 2008 and is a member of the Audit and Finance Committee. Mr. Zukerman has been President of M.E. Zukerman & Co. Incorporated since 1988. Prior to that, Mr. Zukerman spent sixteen years with the firm of Morgan Stanley. Early on he worked extensively on project financing for that firm's energy clients, later, in the early 1980's, Mr. Zukerman participated in numerous mergers and acquisitions, and was joint head of Morgan Stanley's energy group, advising that firm's energy clients. In 1985 Mr. Zukerman became head of the firm's West Coast investment banking operations. Upon his return to New York, he served as Managing Director of the Morgan Stanley merchant banking group. He is currently a Director of Penreco, and a member of the Operating Committee of the Cortez Pipeline. Mr. Zukerman’s education includes an MBA with High Distinction (Baker Scholar); Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (1970); M.A. History and Economics, King's College, Cambridge University (1968); B.A., Harvard College magna cum laude (1966).
Ken Wigglesworth is the Chair of the Audit Committee. Mr. Wigglesworth is a Principal at Eagle One Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Ottawa. From 2001 to 2009, Mr. Wigglesworth was with Newbury Ventures, a private equity firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area, most recently as a Senior Managing Director. Prior to Newbury, Mr. Wigglesworth spent 13 years at Newbridge Networks in various senior management roles. He was appointed Executive Vice President and CFO of Newbridge in 1996, and was instrumental in the successful $8 billion Alcatel/Newbridge merger in 2000. Over Mr. Wigglesworth’s career as an investor and as an operator, he has sat on 17 Boards and 14 Audit Committees (chairing 12 of them). He currently is a Director of Bridgewater Systems (TSX: BWC) and Hydro Ottawa. Mr. Wigglesworth earned his designation as a Chartered Accountant from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1987.
Brian Foody has been a Director since November 2000. With Iogen since 1982, Mr. Foody is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the company and has been responsible for leading Iogen’s strategic direction, its technology development and technology positioning. Under his leadership, Iogen has developed into a world leader in cellulosic ethanol, and an industrial manufacturer of enzyme products for the pulp and paper, textile and animal feed industries. Brian holds Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all received in 1980.
Patrick Foody Jr. has been a Director since November 2001 and is a member of the Compensation, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. With Iogen since 1985, Mr. Foody has been responsible for developing Iogen’s enzyme business, establishing large scale enzyme manufacturing, building and managing commercial relationships worldwide, and leading the design and construction of the world’s first cellulosic ethanol demonstration plant. Mr. Foody currently oversees overall project development of the company’s first large scale commercial facility. Mr. Foody has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Michigan.
